Miroslav Šilhavý is a Member of the scientific staff of the Institute of Mathematics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, Czech Republic. His main areas of interest are continuum mechanics of solids, calculus of variations, and engineering problems of masonry structures. He graduated from the Charles University and received his Ph.D. degree from the Academy of Sciences of Czechoslovakia. He published over 100 scientific papers and a monograph. He lectured at many universities and institutes in North and South America, England, and Europe and spent many extended scientific stays abroad. He is a member of editorial boards of several journals. He presented a number of invited talks at various conferences.
