He served as a Research Associate at the School of Medicine, Toho University, Tokyo, Japan, in 1977. Nakamura also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan (1980–1982) under the supervision of Professor John T. Groves, working on the synthesis and characterization of high-valent iron porphyrin complexes. Currently, he serves as a Professor Emeritus at Toho University since 2012. Also, he serves as a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Science, Toho University, Funabashi, Japan, since 2012. Nakamura's major interest is bioinorganic chemistry especially on the electronic structure of iron porphyrin complexes.
