Vello Tõugu serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Gene Technology at the Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn, Estonia. He got his Diploma in chemistry from Tartu University, Estonia, and studied the reaction mechanisms of hydrolytic enzymes and their application in synthesis at the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics, Tallinn, Estonia, for several years. He received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry of the Estonian Academy of Science, Estonia, in 1991. Since 2005, his research has focused on the role of metal ions in the fibrillization of amyloidogenic peptides with the focus of the interactions of zinc and copper ions with the Alzheimer’s amyloid peptide.
