Dr. Wieland received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Rochester (1982) and MPH from UCLA in Health Services (1983). He is currently Research Director, Division of Geriatrics Services, Palmetto Health Richland; and Professor, Division of Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Wieland is a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society, the Gerontological Society of America, and the Society for Applied Anthropology. He has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed research articles and books chapters, and edited books including Improving Care in the Nursing Home (1993), Cultural Diversity and Geriatric Care (1994), Geriatric Assessment Technology (1995), and Case-Based Geriatrics: A Global Approach (forthcoming). He is Deputy Editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences and Associate Editor of Aging: Clinical and Experimental Research. His interests include comprehensive geriatric assessment, models of geriatric care, long-term care, geriatrics education and workforce development, health care policy, health services research, and ethnography.
