Nelson Durán was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, in 1942. He received the B.S. degree in chemistry from the Universidad Católica de Valpariso and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Porto Rico, Porto Rico, USA, in 1967 and 1972, respectively. He serves as an Associated Professor at the Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Chile (1973-1975), and carried out Visiting Professorship at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (1975), investigating enzymatic generation of excited states intermediates. In 1978, he joined the Chemistry Institute of UNICAMP (Brazil) working in biological chemistry and biotechnology. His present research interests are biotechnology, nanobiotechnology in cosmetics and in pharmaceuticals, besides metallic nanoparticles as antibiotics carriers. He worked as the Director of Environmental Science Center and Biochemical Research Center at Universidade de Mogi das Cruzes, Mogi das Cruzes, SP, Brazil (2001-2007). He was the Coordinator of the Brazilian Nanobiotechnology Network and now is Member of the Brazilian Nanocosmetics and Carbon Nanotubes Networks and of the Committee of Brazil-Argentina Nanotechnology Center. Now, he is a Retired-Invited Professor at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas and serves as an Invited Senior Professor at the Universidade Federal do ABC, Santo Andre, Brazil.
