Zeynel Mungan earned his B.M. degree from the Medical Faculty of Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey. He completed his residency in internal medicine and also a fellowship in gastroenterology at the same university. In 1988, he became an Associate Professor and he was appointed professorship in 1995. Between the years of 1990 and 1992, Mungan worked as a Research Associate Professor at the Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, USA, and has been awarded the Kemal Akdamar GI Research Fellowship. During this period, he worked mostly on GI peptides. Mungan has more than 100 papers published in national and international journals and book chapters in Turkish gastroenterology textbooks. Mungan is a Member of the Turkish Gastroenterology Association. He served as the President of the Istanbul Branch of Turkish Gastroenterology Association between 1999 and 2007 and the Head of the Department of Gastroenterohepatology of Istanbul Medical Faculty between 2005 and 2011. Currently, he is a Member of Koc University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey. His special interest areas are endoscopy, acid peptic diseases, gastrointestinal motility, and inflammatory bowel diseases.
