Usama El Shamy received his Ph.D. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, NY, USA, in August 2004. He joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Tex, USA, as an Assistant Professor in August 2007. His recent research is funded by the National Science Foundation. Dr. El Shamy serves as a registered professional engineer in the States of Texas and Louisiana and a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. His expertise includes modeling the dynamic and seismic response of soil-foundation-structure systems. This line of research covers topics such as analysis and design of machine foundations, foundations of wind turbines (wind power plants), offshore structures, and foundations in seismically active areas. It also deals with assessment of liquefaction potential and earthquake hazard mitigation.
