Jörg Melzer holds an M.D. degree. He serves as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. He graduated from the Medical Faculty, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany, with certified postgraduate training in general medicine, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and complementary medicine (i.e., naturopathy and phytotherapy) at the University Hospital Zurich (UHZ), Zurich, Switzerland. After being a Research Fellow and Chair of the Institute of Complementary Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich (UHZ), Melzer worked as a Project Leader in evidence-based patient care in complementary medicine at the UHZ. He then became the Head of Naturopathic and Complementary Consultation of the Institute of Complementary Medicine at the UHZ. His research and clinical work focused on herbal medicine (phytotherapy) in psychiatry. He is currently a Lead Guest Editor of CAM in Psychiatry at the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal. He received the Werner Kollath Prize in 2004 and the Holzschuh Prize in 2011. Melzer serves as an Associate Lecturer in complementary medicine at the University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland, and a Member of the Swiss Medical Association of Phytotherapy (SMGP); the International Society for Complementary Medicine Research (ISCMR); the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology (DGPPN); and the Freud Institute Zurich (FIZ). Melzer has published, coauthored, and edited several articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as textbooks and serves as a member of advisory boards and as a reviewer of journals in the field of complementary medicine.
