His research expertise is mainly related to computer-aided process engineering in life sciences and biotechnological, chemical, and environmental applications with particular emphasis on the following areas of activity: modeling, monitoring, and control of bioprocesses; systems biology, bioinformatics, and metabolic engineering; image analysis and chemometrics in wastewater treatment and biotechnology; process integration and design for pollution prevention. He supervised 5 Ph.D. theses, one of them being awarded with CUF Prize for the best chemical and biological engineering thesis in Portugal in 2003, as well as 8 M.S. dissertations, having 5 Ph.D. and 5 M.S. ongoing works. He published 4 books and authored more than 60 international refereed papers and book chapters as well as more than 160 papers and communications in conferences. Ferreira is the Vice Head of the Department of Biological Engineering and the Director of the Master’s Course on Environmental Management. He is the Vice Head of the Chemical Engineering Section of the Portuguese Engineers Board, the General Secretary of the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology, and the Editor-in-Chief of Engenharia QuÍmica journal. Ferreira is responsible for the Portuguese Portal of the Working Party on Education in Chemical Engineering, the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. He is a Member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Biosystems and Bioprocesses. He is also an Editorial Board Member of the journal of Chemical Product and Process Modeling and Environmental Engineering and Management Journal. He has integrated into the organizing committees of six conferences (CHEMPOR 2005, CAC 2004, ESCAPE14, CONTROLO'2000, ESBES2, and BIOTEC'98) as well as the international program committees of 20 congresses (ENPROMER 2005; IFAC CAB 2007, 2004, and 2001; VIIP 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, and 2003; SIP 2005, 2004, and 2003; BIOTEC 2007, 2005, and 2003, etc.).
