Edwin J.R. van Beek
Edwin J.R. van Beek serves as the SINAPSE Chair of Clinical Radiology at the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK, and as the Director of the Clinical Research Imaging Centre (www.cric.ed.ac.uk). van Beek graduated from Erasmus Medical School, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1987, then went on to prepare a Ph.D. degree and take a radiology training at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. He also received additional formal training in clinical epidemiology during this time. van Beek went to the University of Sheffield to gain promotion to Reader. His main clinical and research focus was on cardiothoracic imaging using CT and MRI. He helped establish a successful chest MRI program focussed on pulmonary hypertension and novel contrast agents developments, and underwent formal training in PET at King’s College London; thus, facilitating the development of oncologic imaging in Sheffield. He received his Masters of education for university lecturers. Subsequently, van Beek was appointed as Professor of radiology, medicine, and biomedical engineering at the University of Iowa (USA), where he developed a clinical service for cardiac CT angiography, worked on CT-based methods for identification and quantification of lung diseases, and participated in a range of NIH funded research studies. He was appointed to his current position in 2009, with a main interest in cardiovascular, pulmonary and oncology imaging research. van Beek has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, 350 abstracts, 3 books, and more than 30 book chapters.
