Dr. Scient. Per E. Schwarze is director of the Department of Air Pollution and Noise at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, Norway. He got his Dr. Scient degree at the University of Oslo, and after 10 years of cancer research at the Cancer Research Institute, Radium hospital, Oslo, Norway, joined the Institute of Public Health. Most of his work has been in air pollution toxicology and he is a EUROTOX registered toxicologist. Most of the publications in air pollution effects are on responses in the lungs of exposed animals, and on mechanistic responses in human and animal lung cells. He has also been involved in human clinical studies. In recent years he has been involved in several epidemiological studies including air pollution and noise exposure. He is heavily involved in the department’s advisory work for central and local health authorities, environmental agencies and the State Road directory. He has served in review committees in Europe and USA. He is on the editorial board of Particle and Fibre Toxicology and reviewer in several journals. He serves as advisor and Norwegian member in the UNECE Task Force on Health lead by WHO Europe.
