Munetaka Sugiyama received his Diploma in botany from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and his Doctor degree in biology from Tohoku University, Japan. After working as a Research Associate at the Department of Biology, Tohoku University, he moved to Botanical Gardens, Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo. Since 2001, he has directed a plant physiology laboratory team at Botanical Gardens as an Associate Professor. He has been investigating plant cell dedifferentiation and organogenesis in vitro mainly by molecular genetic approaches, for the purpose of uncovering fundamental regulatory systems of cell proliferation underlying the flexible, robust, and autonomous nature of plant development.
