R. Pignatello was born in 1963 in Avola, Siracusa, Italy. He gained an M.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of Catania, Catania, Italy in 1985, after which he started working at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy of the same university, where at present he is an Associate Professor of pharmaceutical technology and legislation. His main research interests range from controlled/targeted colloidal drug delivery systems (nanoparticles, liposomes, SLN, and micelles), lipophilic prodrugs/bioconjugate synthesis (drug-lipoamino acid conjugates), new biopolymers characterization and application, to calorimetry techniques (DSC, LB) for studying drug/biomembrane interactions. Pignatello is at present the author of 95 papers on peer-reviewed international journals and about 120 congress communications. He is a Member of the Directive Committee of the TEFARCO Innova Inter-University Research Consortium (Parma, Italy). He assists the European Commission as an Independent Expert for the evaluation of research projects (6th and 7th Framework Programs).
