Cesare Barbieri
Cesare Barbieri is a Professor of astronomy at the University of Padova. He was born in S. Giovanni Persiceto, Italy, on November 27, 1942. In 1985–1991, he was Director of Astronomical Observatory Padova; in 1990–1998, Director of Telescopio Nazionale Galileo Canary Islands; in 1980–1987, Italian responsible Halley Multicolour Camera, ESA Mission GIOTTO to comet Halley; in 1985–1987, in the ESA Astronomy Working Group; in 1991–1994, ESA Space Science Advisory Committee and Horizon since 2000; in 1988–1992, in ESO Scientific Technical Committee; in 1977–1994, in the Team Faint Object Camera Hubble Space Telescope; since 2001, in Advisory Panel Astronomical Research, Estonia; in 2004-2005, in Advisory Panel, Belgian Ministry of Research for astronomical project; and since 1995 to date, Italian responsible in OSIRIS/ROSETTA. His current teaching activities and main academic duties include courses of fundamental astronomy, astrophysics of stars and planets, elements of astronomy and astrophysics courses in astronomy and aerospace engineering. He is in Board of Scuola Galileiana di Eccellenza, Director of the Ph.D. School in Space Sciences and Technologies. Barbieri's ongoing research themes include diffuse sodium in the solar system (comets, Mercury, Io); spectrophotometry of comets and asteroids; telescopes and instrumentation; and quantum optics for astronomy. His main conferences and books (in English) are European Satellite Astrometry (ESA Conference, 1977), The Three Galileos: the man, the spacecraft, the telescope (1997, Kluwer), Earth-Moon Relationships (2000, Kluwer), Fundamentals of Astronomy (2006, Taylor and Francis). He shared in many scientific exhibits: 1986 Halley and Giotto (Padova and European cities), 1993 Galileo (Madrid), 1996 from Galileo to the Galileo Telescope (La Palma, Canary Islands), and 1997 Viaggio nel Cosmo (Padova and Rome). He is Member in Accademia Galileiana, Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere Arti, SAIt , IAU, EAS. He received NASA Group Award for FOC/HST, Gold Medal of Italian Ministry for Public Education for Education, Culture and Art.
