Loren M. Smith

Loren M. Smith received his Ph.D. degree in wildlife ecology from Utah State University in 1983. Following his Ph.D. degree, he served as a Research Scientist at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, University of Georgia, and then joined the Texas Tech University faculty in 1984. He has been conducting playa wetland research since that time. Smith joined the Oklahoma State University faculty in summer 2007 as the Zoology Department Head. Smith has published more than 150 research papers in field and ecosystem ecology, edited several books and symposia, and written two books. His book Playas of the Great Plains won the Outstanding Book Award from the Wildlife Society in 2004. He has served on numerous editorial boards (e.g., Auk, Wetlands, Gibier, Faune, Sauvage, France), and he is a past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Wildlife Management. The preponderance of Smith?s research has revolved around wetland ecosystem structure and function. He also studies environmental influences on ecosystem processes with multidisciplinary teams on many different wetland systems. Currently, he has several studies focused on playa wetland ecosystem services.
