Valeria V. Gordan
Valeria V. Gordan is Professor and Principal Investigator of the Dental Practice-based Research Network (DPBRN) at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA. Gordan received her D.D.S. degree from the State University of Londrina, Londrina, PR, Brazil, in 1993, her M.S. degree in operative dentistry from The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, USA, in 1997, and her M.S. degree in clinical investigation from the College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA, in 2007. Her research interests covered the area of caries diagnosis and preservation of tooth structure using minimally invasive restorative techniques through translational and clinical research applications. She has been awarded over $5 million for research grants funded by industry and by NIH-NIDCR. She has published extensively and contributed in various national and international committees in the dental profession. The DPBRN is a consortium of participating practices and organizations committed to advancing the knowledge of dental practice. She has been associated with the DPBRN since its inception, and it has allowed her to investigate pressing issues in clinical care while offering the unique opportunity to collaborate with investigators throughout the US and abroad. Most importantly, the DPBRN has made it possible to study "real-life" and evidence-based dentistry through the input of over 1,400 private practitioners. As a participant in the DPBRN, she has been designing clinical trials including the very first study of the entire network involving diagnosis and treatment of dental caries. She led several other DPBRN studies, which aimed to address the decision-making processes and approaches used by practitioners in the restoration process. The long-term goal of those studies is to establish evidence-based criteria for the diagnosis and treatment of dental caries as well as to develop guidelines for caries risk assessment and preventive strategies to reduce the burden of dental caries.
