G. Lemperle studied medicine in Germany and finished his residency in general surgery at the University of Freiburg, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, in 1970, interrupted by a fellowship in immunology at Yale University, New Haven, Conn, USA, (1964–66). He trained in plastic surgery in Frankfurt/Main and became Chief of Plastic Surgery at the St. Markus-Hospital and Professor at the University of Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany in 1978. He moved to San Diego, CA in 1998 to become Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego, San Diego, Calif, USA, and cofounded Artes Medical, Inc. for the production of a permanent wrinkle filler ArteFill, which got FDA approval in 2006. In 2009, he cofounded AscentX Medical Inc. in Vancouver, Canada for the production of an injectable treatment of gastric reflux and urinary incontinence. In 1979, he founded Interplast-Germany e.V., a nonprofit organization for plastic surgery in developing countries, for which he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of Germany in 1997. He served as President of the German Association of Plastic Surgeons from 1985 to 88 and received the Dieffenbach-Medal for his lifelong engagement for plastic surgery in Germany.
