Christian Beetz leads the group Functional Neurogenetics in the Department of Clinical Chemistry of Jena University Hospital, Jena, Germany. Beetz was educated as a biologist and holds a Ph.D. degree in natural sciences. The corresponding thesis was entitled "Molecular characterization of gliomas: deletions in the tumour’s genome and alterations in its transcriptome." His current research focuses on hereditary neurodegeneration with special emphasis on the spastic paraplegias, the spinocerebellar ataxias, and the distal mononeuropathies. Topics addressed include the genetic basis of these conditions, genotype-phenotype correlations, and functional studies on relevant cellular and animal models.
