Rafael Borja is a Doctor in chemical sciences since 1989. He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Cordoba, Cordoba, Spain, in 1985. In 1986 he started his scientific activity in the Instituto de la Grasa belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) of Seville, Spain. During the period 1992-1994 he made a research stay in the Environmental Technology Centre of the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), Manchester, UK. He is currently a Research Scientist and responsible for the Wastewater Treatment Group, which is integrated in the Industrial Processes and Environment Research Unit of the Instituto de la Grasa (CSIC). He is an author of more than 180 original peer-reviewed research papers published in international Scientific Journals included in the Science Citation index (SCI). He is a Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal Process Biochemistry since 2000. He has supervised four doctoral theses and is author of several patents. He is responsible for several international and national researches through different projects funded by the European Union and Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.He has participated in a number of research contracts carried out between the Instituto de la Grasa and various Spanish and foreign companies related to the purification and treatment of wastewaters and solid wastes from agro food industries.
