Damien Harkin is a graduate of the University of Adelaide with a B.S. (1988) and Ph.D. (1994) degrees from the Faculty of Medicine. Subsequent training was received whilst undertaking research at Harvard Medical School (1994–1996) and the University of Melbourne (1997). More recent appointments include teaching positions at Griffith University (1997–2001) and the Queensland University of Technology (since 2001), as well as research positions within QUT’s new Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) and the privately funded Queensland Eye Institute. Dr. Harkin’s research career has spanned across several fields including studies of blood cells, embryonic cells, and the kidney, but his most recent efforts have been focussed on establishing procedures for the treatment of eye diseases using stem cells and biomaterials.
