Dr. Sergio Vargas is Professor at the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile, since 1995 and currently leads a team for clinical and laboratory research at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Vargas did his Pediatric Residency at the University of Chile and trained in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, between 1989 and 1994. His main research interests are Pneumocystis infections, Pre-clinical studies and Phase I - III clinical trials for evaluation of antimicrobial compounds. His original research in Pneumocystis infections of the immunocompetent host has gained continuous competitive funding since 1996 mainly from Fondecyt federal funds in Chile and, also, from international agencies like The Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in the U.S., the British Council in the U.K., and Inserm in France. He has established collaborations with the world expert leaders in the field. He also holds a patent for the development of xylitol as a dietary sugar alcohol in the prevention of mucosal candidiasis in AIDS. He has served as an independent consultant for protocol and drug development for industry. Dr. Vargas has authored more than 40 original contributions in peer reviewed journals, presented more than 100 abstracts at Chilean and international meetings and has given lectures and seminars, mostly on Pneumocystis in the immunocompetent host, at international conferences and institutions in the United States and Europe.
