Maria Joao Cardoso has been appointed as a Head and Breast Surgeon at the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Cancer Center, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2011. Her undergraduate and postgraduate studies were undertaken at Porto Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. From 2006 to 2011, she was appointed as the Assistant Professor of the Department of Surgery of the Porto Faculty of Medicine. From 2007 to 2010, she was the Clinical Director of the S. Joao Hospital Breast Unit in Porto, Portugal. She holds a Ph.D. degree in medicine from the University of Porto with the topic “Objective evaluation of aesthetic results in breast cancer conservative treatment.” Since then, the majority of her research activity is related to this topic and the development of objective ways of evaluating aesthetic results in all forms of breast surgery, aiming at a better quality of life for patients. Cardoso is the Co-coordinator of the Breast Research group at INESC Porto with Professor Jaime Cardoso. Until 2012, she has published more than 20 papers in international journals as first author, with an average impact factor of 3.1 according to the JCR 2010. Until 2012, she has also coauthored more than 80 full communications in major international conferences. She is a Member of the editorial board of the Breast Journal and a reviewer of several-topic international journals. One of her main interests is also in quality of life of breast cancer patients in 2011 and she founded the Support Centre for Breast Cancer Patients, Mama Help (www.mamahelp.pt). She is a Member of the board of the Portuguese Society of Senology.
