Jaques Waisberg was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1952. He graduated in medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the ABC Foundation, Santo André, Brazil, in 1975. He received his M.A. degree in gastroenterology from the Brazilian Institute for Studies and Research in Gastroenterology (IBEPEGE) São Paulo, in 1985, and his Ph.D. degree in operative technique and experimental surgery from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Escola Paulista de Medicina, in 1987. He works currently as the Chairman and as the Head of the Division of Surgical Gastroenterology of the Surgery Department of Faculty of Medicine of the ABC Foundation and as the Surgeon-in-Chief of Surgical Gastroenterology Department of Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual de São Paulo (IAMSPE). He serves also as the Coordinator of Postgraduate Program in Health Sciences in IAMSPE, as the Ad Hoc Consultant of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), as a Coordinator of the Undergraduate Research Fellowships Program (PIBIC) of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development in IAMSPE, and as a Researcher of Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Escola Paulista de Medicina. He has experience in medicine with emphasis in gastrointestinal surgery, mainly in the following topics: gastrointestinal neoplasms, neuroendocrine tumors, biological markers of tumor, signaling pathway in human colorectal and gastric carcinomas, and molecular biology of gastrointestinal neoplasms.
