A. E. Kitabchi
Abbas E. Kitabchi is a Professor of medicine and molecular sciences, and the Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis—a position he has held since 1973. He completed the M.S., Ph.D., and M.D. degrees at the University of Oklahoma and received postdoctoral fellowship in biochemistry at Oklahoma Med Research Foundation, where he was the first to isolate the product of lipid peroxidation, malonaldehyde, from liver of vitamin E deficient animals. After completion of fellowship in endocrinology with late Dr. R. H. Williams at the University of Washington Seattle, in 1968, he was recruited to UTHSC Memphis, first as a Director then as a Researcher at the VA Hospital. His work on the hyperglycemic crises regarding pathogenesis and various treatment modalities in DKA has provided guidelines for the American Diabetes Association and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists where his treatment method has become standard therapy. Dr. Kitabchi has served on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, International Journal of Osteoporosis and Metabolism, Iranian Journal of Diabetes and Lipid Disorders, and International Journal of Endocrinology. He is the author/coauthor of more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and reviews in the fields of diabetes, endocrinology acute and chronic complications of diabetes, mechanism of insulin resistance, and obesity and role of antioxidants in oxidative stress. He is a member of societies including ADA, AACE, The Endocrine Society, ASCI, AAP, ASBMB, EASD, and IDF. He has served on the Research Grant and Program Committees of the ADA, and is on the Task Force Committee of AACE for Obesity.
