Chris Rissel was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1961. He received the B.S. (psychology) degree with honors from the University of New South Wales in 1985, the M.P.H. degree from the University of Sydney in 1990, and the Ph.D. degree (epidemiology) from the University of Minnesota (USA) in 1994. He now holds a position of Professor in the School of Public Health, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia. Previously he has worked for many years as a Health Promotion Practitioner, and from 2000 to 2010, he was the Director of the Health Promotion Service at the Sydney South West Area Health Service. His current research interests focus on obesity prevention and active transport, cycling advocacy, and tobacco control. From 2002 to 2008 Rissel was as Editor-in-Chief of the Health Promotion Journal of Australia.
