Barbara Swanson

Barbara Swanson, a FAAN and a holder of Ph.D. and RN degrees, is a Professor at the Department of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing at the Rush University College of Nursing with an interest in complementary/alternative therapies. She has conducted research to study the effects of complementary therapies to modulate parameters of cellular immunity and to manage neuropathic pain in persons with HIV/AIDS. She currently has funding from NIH/NCCAM to conduct a clinical trial of policosanol, a sugar-cane-derived dietary supplement used to normalize dyslipidemic profiles, to manage HIV-related dyslipidemia (R21 AT003077-01). She has also collaborated on studies to test the effects of (a) mindfulness training to manage symptoms in persons with ulcerative colitis and to reduce nursing errors and (b) the dietary supplement, glucomannan, on weight loss. Dr. Swanson has published over 80 articles and book chapters, serves on journal editorial boards, and is the Lead Editor of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Core Curriculum, 3rd edition.
