Patrick J. Twomey BSc, MB BCh BAO, EurClinChem, FACB, FRCPath Patrick Twomey is consultant chemical pathologist at the Ipswich Hospital. He obtained an Intercalated BSc in Biochemistry from University College Cork before being awarded his MB BCh BAO in 1995. He trained in chemical pathology, in Dublin, at St James’ Hospital, and later in Edinburgh before being appointed to his current position in 2004. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and became a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (USA) in 2006. He is an examiner and an assessor for the Royal College of Pathologists and is also a member of its Credentials Panel. He runs clinical metabolic services for dyslipidaemia, obesity, nutrition and biochemical abnormalities. His research interests include lipidology and nutrition as well laboratory mathematics and IT. He has authored several book chapters and over 70 original publications in the fields of clinical biochemistry, metabolic medicine, lipids and nutrition. As In addition to being an editorial board member for ISRN Pathology, he is also a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Pathology, The British Medical Journal Case Reports, World Journal of Biological Chemistry. He won the British Hyperlipidaemia Association Young Researcher of the Year award in 2001. He is Chair of the Chemical Pathology section of the Association of Clinical Pathologists, Vice-Director of the Clinical Practice Section of the Association for Clinical Biochemistry, and a member of HEART-UK’s Medical & Scientific Committee (the UK cholesterol charity). He is currently a member of the UK Health Technology Appraisal panels.
