Stephen Tobe

Stephen Tobe received his undergraduate degree in biology from Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, in 1967, his M.S. degree from the Department of Biology, York University, in 1969, and his Ph.D. degree in parasitology from McGill University in 1972. He was a postdoctoral Fellow during 1972–1974 at the Unit of Invertebrate Chemistry and Physiology, Agricultural Research Council, and a Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, UK. He joined the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto in 1974 as an Assistant Professor and became a Full Professor in 1982. His laboratory works on aspects of the comparative endocrinology of invertebrates, particularly in insects (cockroaches and drosophila) and crustaceans (shrimp, crayfish, and lobster). Tobe was awarded the C. Gordon Hewitt Award by the Entomological Society of Canada in 1982, and the E.W.R. Steacie Fellowship by the National Research Council of Canada (1982–1984). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) in 1987. In 1988, he delivered the Opening Plenary Lecture at the International Congress of Entomology, Vancouver, and in 1990, he received the Gold Medal of the Entomological Society of Canada. Tobe was awarded the Pickford Medal in Comparative Endocrinology by the International Federation of Comparative Endocrinological Societies in 1993. He is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher in plant and animal science. He was a Group Leader of “Insect Biotech Canada,” a national network of Centers of Excellence, during 1990–1994, and was a Scientific Director of the network from 1994 to 2000. He has served as an Associate Dean of Science at the Faculty of Arts and Science (1988–1994) and as a Vice Dean from 1995 to 1996. Tobe presently serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Insect Physiology, General and Comparative Endocrinology, and Physiological Entomology. He has also served as a Guest Editor of Insect Biochemistry (1987) and Journal of Insect Physiology (2004–2005).
