Giuseppe Buttazzo was born in Italy in 1954. He graduated in mathematics at the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy in 1976 (summa cum laude) and received in the same year the Diploma of Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, where he won a national competition as a student. He made the Ph.D. degree studies during the period from 1976 to 1980 at Scuola Normale di Pisa, under the supervision of Ennio De Giorgi, and he got his first permanent position at Scuola Normale as a Researcher in 1980. He obtained the full professorship in mathematical analysis at University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy in 1986, and then he moved in 1990 to University of Pisa, where he presently works at the Department of Mathematics. His main research interests include calculus of variations, partial differential equations, optimization problems, and optimal control theory. On these subjects he wrote more than 150 scientific papers and several books. Plenary speaker at many international meetings and at many departments in Italy and abroad, he has been the adviser of several Laurea and Ph.D. theses. Buttazzo is the Editor of several international journals as the Journal of Convex Analysis (Managing Editor), Control Optimisation and Calculus of Variations (COCV), Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems, Set-Valued and Variational Analysis: Theory and Applications, Revista Matematica Complutense, International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Journal of the Egyptian Mathematical Society, Communications in Applied Analysis, International Journal of Dynamical Systems and Differential Equations (IJDSDE), International Journal of Differential Equations and Applications, and Annali dell'Università di Ferrara (1987–1990).
