Gul Atilla received her D.D.S. degree from the School of Dentistry, University of Ege, Izmir, Turkey, in 1978 and completed her Ph.D. degree in periodontology at the same university in 1986. She started to work as an Assistant in the Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, University of Ege, and became an Associate Professor in 1991 and then a full time Professor in 1998. She also lectures in the Ph.D. program of the same department since 1991. Dr. Atilla was invited to work as a Visiting Professor in 2005 for Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Mass, USA. She has more than 90 internationally published papers and several awards. In addition, she is a member of national and international societies and of the editorial boards of some international and national journals. Her main research area is related to periodontal medicine. Her studies have focused on the relation of gingival overgrowth and renal transplantation. She also studied the immunological pathway and polymorphisms of periodontal diseases as well as systemic and local antimicrobial therapy of periodontal diseases.
