Giovanni Volpicelli was born in Catania, Italy, in 1962. He received the Medicine degree in 1987, with specialization in metabolism in 1990 and in emergency medicine in 1997. He was a Research Fellow at Diabetes Unit, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, England, in 1988. He joined the Trainee School of Emergency Medicine, University of Catania, Italy, between 1992 and 1997. Volpicelli was a Research Fellow at the Department of Internal Medicine, Salgrenska Hospital, Goteborg, Sweden, in 1996. He was a Critical Care Physician at Gradenigo Hospital, Torino, Italy during 2000–2002. Presently, he is Emergency Physician at San Luigi Gonzaga University Hospital, Torino, Italy. He is mainly interested in emergency and critical ultrasound. Achievements include being one of the main expert in lung ultrasound. He is member of the WINFOCUS (World Interactive Network Focused on Critical Ultrasound) from 2005. He is a member of the ACEP (American College of Emergency Medicine, section of Emergency Ultrasound) from 2009. He is a Fellow (FCCP) of the ACCP (American College of Chest Physician) from 2009 and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the first International Consensus Conference on Lung Ultrasound 2010–2011. Volpicelli is Instructor of the ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) from 2011. He is member of the Editorial Board and Board of Reviewers of many international journals on emergency medicine, respiratory medicine, internal medicine, and critical care medicine.
