Jürgen Steinmeyer is an Associate Professor of pharmacology and toxicology and the Head of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories at the University of Giessen, Germany. He was born in 1958, became a Ph.D. in 1987 at the University of Bonn, Germany, and worked from 1988 to 1990 as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell University in Ithaca, USA. From 1990 to 1998, Dr. Steinmeyer was the Head of the Section for Rheumatic Diseases at the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of Bonn, where he received his Habilitation degree in pharmacology and toxicology in 1998. Since 1999, he has been the Head of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University Clinics in Gießen. Dr. Steinmeyer has been a DGPT pharmacologist since 1997 and a Member of the Pharmaceutical Drug Commission of the German Medical Council since 2003. His research has focused on the pathophysiology and pharmacology of osteoarthritis, mechanobiology of cartilage, synovial fluid, and synovial joints with the overall goal to improve diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis. He has published 88 original papers, reviews, and book chapters and has done peer reviews for 7 international journals and grant evaluations for 6 international and domestic organizations.
