Enrique P. Gurfinkel
Enrique P. Gurfinkel obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1982. From 1982 to 1989, he served as a Resident of Internal Medicine and then was a Resident in Cardiology at the Hospital Municipal Juan A. Fernández in Buenos Aires. In 1986 and 1988, Dr. Gurfinkel obtained 2 educational scholarships for developing clinical and basic research studies and programs in London and Cambridge (UK), respectively. In 1990, he returned to the Hospital Municipal Juan A. Fernández as a Consultant. In 1992, he was designated as the Chief of the Coronary Care Unit at the Favaloro Foundation University Hospital. In 2008, he was promoted to Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at the same institution. In 1995, he obtained his Ph.D. degree and began a new position at the University of Buenos Aires and Favaloro University. In 1997, he became a Professor of internal medicine. In 1998, the American Heart Association asked him to serve as a member of the Educational Program of Myocardial Infarction for Latin America. He is a Fellow of the A.H.A. and A. C. C. and Principal Investigator for the National Research Academy in Argentina (CONICET). He is the Chairman of the National Guidelines for Non-ST Segment Myocardial Infarction of the Federation of the Cardiac Society. In 2003, he was nominated as one of the best Clinical Research Doctors by the Association for Eradication of Heart Attacks. He has received 7 international awards in the past 5 years. Due to his pioneer works in silent ischemia in unstable angina, the development of the first-time use of low molecular weight heparins in acute coronary syndromes, and his original contributions to the studies of infection, immunity, and atherosclerosis, the High Chamber of the Argentina Parliament presented him an award in 2002 and 2004. In 2007, he was honored by the University of Tucumán as a Distinguish Professor in medicine. In 2008, Dr. Gurfinkel wrote the first edition of the textbook Coronary Artery Disease.
