Rafael Mateo

Rafael Mateo, D.V.M., Ph.D., is Professor of Toxicology at the Institute of Game and Wildlife Research, a center belonging to the Spanish Council of Research and the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Ciudad Real, Spain). Dr. Mateo studied Veterinary Medicine and obtained the PhD in 1999 in the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain). He extended his postdoctoral research in the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (Maryland, USA) and the University of Aberdeen (UK). He has focused his research on the epidemiology of lead poisoning in birds, the implications of lead shot use on food safety and the effects on wildlife of heavy metal contamination in mining areas. He has authored or co-authored over 80 scientific papers and book chapters.
