Jose Manuel Montes
Jose Manuel Montes obtained his M.D. degree from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1991. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Alcala in 1998, and his psychiatric training was done at Hospital Ramón y Cajal, Madrid. He completed additional training at the International Mood Clinic at the University of California at San Diego. From 1999 to 2007, he served as a Clinical Associate Professor of psychiatry at the University of Alcala. He works presently as a Chief of the Psychiatry Section in the Hospital Sureste of Madrid. His clinical expertise ranges the affective disorders spectrum, including dysthymia, bipolar spectrum disorders, resistant depression, and personality disorders bordering with affective disorders. His leadership in the field of bipolar disorder in Spain focused on promoting research and the improvement of the clinical care for patients with bipolar disorder. Thus, he founded the Bipolar Network for the study of bipolar disorder in Madrid, and he acts presently as the Secretary of the Spanish Society of Bipolar Disorder. His research contributions include more than 100 scientific publications in English or in Spanish. He is conducting research focused on different aspects of the bipolar condition and the improvement of adherence to medication in severe mental illness.
