Francisco Javier Carod-Artal
Francisco Javier Carod-Artal completed his neurology residency at the Miguel Servet Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain, 1990, and obtained an M.S. degree (1996) and a Ph.D. degree in neurology (1999) from the Complutense University, Madrid. He also had a postdoctoral research fellowship in stroke and epidemiology at the Neurological Institute at Columbia University, New York City, NY, USA. In 1998, he moved to Brazil and became a Consultant Neurologist with the Sarah Network of Rehabilitation Hospitals, where he founded the Department of Neurology. During 11 years, he was the Director of the Department of Neurology and began a program to train Brazilian neurologists. Dr. Carod-Artal has published more than 150 papers in international journals, such as Neurology, Stroke, Lancet Neurology, Movement Disorders, Cerebrovascular Diseases, and Revista de Neurologia. He is also a reviewer for more than 30 neurology journals. Dr. Carod-Artal is well known for his research into neuroepidemiology, stroke, neurorehabilitation, tropical neurology (neurodengue, cerebrovascular complications of Chagas disease, neuroschistosomiasis, and tropical spastic paraparesis), and other neurological disorders. Dr. Carod-Artal adapted and validated the stroke impact scale and the psychosocial, cognitive, motor, and autonomic scales for outcomes in Parkinson’s disease (SCOPA) for use in Brazil. He is also a well-known Neuroanthropologist, having undertaken several cross-cultural and anthropological studies on neurological diseases (mainly epilepsy and headache) in various isolated tribes in Central and South America. He has written several articles about the ethnohistory of plants and Hallucinogens in several native cultures. In 2009, he returned to Europe and had an appointment as a Consultant Neurologist at the Virgen de la Luz Hospital in Cuenca, Spain. Since July 2012, Dr. Carod-Artal has been a Visiting Professor of neurology at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) in Barcelona.
