Sandy van Vuuren is currently working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. After developing a keen interest in research, she proceeded to further her studies while teaching pharmaceutical microbiology. Vuuren holds an M.S. degree in medical microbiology and a Ph.D. degree in the antimicrobial properties of medicinal plants. Her research interests include the following: microbiological viability studies (medicinal plants and synthesized compounds), structure activity relationships, pharmacological interactions, essential oil composition, antimicrobial efficacy, and any formulation studies involving antimicrobial principles. Her role in the postgraduate supervision not only extends to her own students (23 past and 10 currently registered students), but she is also involved in training students from other visiting universities. Vuuren has reviewed over 100 manuscripts in various journals on both national and international levels. She has also had the opportunity to be invited to review research projects by national and international organizations. Vuuren has, moreover, coedited two special editions for the international journal Natural Product Communications, and she presently serves on the Editorial Board of the South African Journal of Botany. Vuuren, furthermore, currently holds a national benchmark evaluated rating (C3 NRF) which provides a distinguished research status.
