Pentti Karjalainen got his Ph.D. degree from the University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, in 1974, with the thesis dealing with cyclic behavior of various materials. After working in industry for three years, Karjalainen returned back to the University of Oulu in 1977, being firstly nominated as an Assistant Professor and in 1988 as a Professor in physical metallurgy. He has supervised a research group working on the development of steels, supported by numerous industrial companies, foundations, and Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) of EU. The results have been published in about 330 papers. Physical simulation, microstructure characterization, and mechanical testing are the main tools employed. The major expertise is accordingly manufacturing, properties, and applications of steels, microstructure characterization, mechanical testing, and failure analysis. Karjalainen is also a Reviewer of several international journals in the field of materials science and engineering.
