Alvis Brazma

Alvis Brazma received the Ph.D. degree in computer science, Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, in 1988. He also received the M.S. degree in mathematics and physics from University of Latvia, Riga, Latvia, in 1982. He was a Research Scientist at the University of Latvia (1988–1990), a Postdoctoral Fellow at New Mexico State University (1990-1991), a visiting scientist at Helsinki University (1995–1997), an Associate Professor at the University of Latvia (1992–1997), a scientist in EMBL-EBI (1997–2000), and a Team Leader in EMBL-EBI (2000–2003). His professional activities till 2007 are varoius. He is on the MGED Board of Directors and an Associate Editor of Bioinformatics (2002–2006) and on the Board of Editors since 2007. He was on the Board of Editors of Environmental Health Perspectives (2003–2006), on the Scientific Advisory Board of Edinburgh Mouse Gene Expression Database, and on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Biological Atlas of Insulin Receptors (BAIRs), Wellcome Trust. He was a Member of the BBSRC Data Sharing Working Group, the Steering Committee of the European Computational Biology Conference (2001–2005), and at the Bioinformatics Task Force of National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI), UK. Moreover, he is an EMBL Graduation Committee Alternate Member, and he is on the program committees of ISMB, WABI, Wellcome Trust Conferences on Comparative and Functional Genomics (Hinxton, October 2003, October 2005, Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Conference). He is a Grant Application Reviewer for FP6 (EC), Norwegian Functional Genomics Program (FUGE), German Strategic Genome Initiative (DFG, GABI future), Genome Canada, Wellcome Trust, European Science Foundation, MRC, BBSRC, and Dutch Genome Initiative. He is a Reviewer for Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Medicine, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Reviews Genetics, Science, Journal of Molecular Biology, EMBO Journal, Genome Research, Cell, FEBS letters, Nucleic Acids Research, Genome Biology, Bioinformatics, and BMC Bioinformatics. He is an Organizer for the committee of Wellcome Trust/CSH Conference on Functional Genomics and Systems Biology and an Organizer/Coorganizer of seven EMBO courses at EBI and EMBL HD and Bioinformatics Research and Education Workshop (BREW) (23–25 April, 2006, Hinxton).
