User Biography : Dr Gaetano Zafarana Gaetano Zafarana holds Honours Degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from University College London, London, UK and Ph.D. degree from the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London, UK and Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Zafarana did postdoctoral training at both the Department of Pathology, Josephine Nefkens Institute, Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands and the Department of Biomedical Science, Centre for Stem Cell Biology, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK. He currently serves as Senior Scientific Associate, Ontario Cancer Institute, Princess Margaret Hospital and Manager Core1, STTARR Laboratories, MaRS,Toronto Medical Discovery Tower, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Zafarana's current area of research covers translational studies on the genetics of intermediate-risk prostate cancers to identify a genetic signature to expedite diagnosis and personalize the treatment of prostate cancer in patients; isolation and characterization of the tumor-initiating cells of prostate cancer in view to effectively ablate tumor recurrence after radiation and chemotherapy treatments. His areas of expertise include molecular and cellular biology, transcriptional regulation, animal models: mouse transgenics and knockouts, preclinical models: primary and established cancer cell-derived prostate xenografts, cancer genomics, normal and cancer stem cell biology. .
