Christoph G. O. Baerwald
Christoph G. O. Baerwald is a Professor of internal medicine and rheumatology at the University of Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany. Before moving to Leipzig he worked at the University of Marburg, Marburg, Germany, and for two years as Research Fellow at the Rheumatology Department of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, London, UK (head: Professor Dr. Panayi). He is a member of several national and international societies including the American College of Rheumatology and the German Society of Rheumatology. In the latter, he is the Speaker of the Study Group Pain since 2001. Baerwald has been reviewing grants from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)) as well as from international research foundations. He also works as Invited Reviewer for several international journals. His current research is in interactions between the neuroendocrine system and the immune system with respect to chronic rheumatic diseases. Baerwald has published over 200 articles, chapters, and monographs on pathophysiology and therapy of rheumatic diseases, in particular rheumatoid arthritis. Further topics of his publications are interactions of the neuroendocrine systems like the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the immune system as well as genetic susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis. Very recently, Baerwald was the Eeditor of a book on pain therapy in rheumatic diseases.
