Samir K. Pal

Samir K. Pal was born in 1970 in Sonamukhi near Kolkata, India. After receiving his B.S. degree in 1991 from the University of Burdwan, India, and his M.S. degree in 1994 from Jadavpur University, India, in physics, he completed his Ph.D. work in 2000 with Professor Kankan Bhattacharyya at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). In March 2000, he joined the research group of Professor Ahmed H. Zewail, Nobel Laureate in chemistry, in 1999, at the California Institute of Technology. The focus of his postdoctoral study at Caltech was on the fundamental ultrafast (femtosecond) processes (hydration, electron, and energy transfer) in biological macromolecules, proteins, and DNA. In October 2003, he joined S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Salt Lake, Kolkata. Present interest of his research group is in the exploration of dynamical time scales from femtosecond/picosecond regime associated with structure and function of biological macromolecules. Working on the bionano interface is also the interest of the group.
