Sunil Nautiyal has carried out his Ph.D. degree work in G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development (an autonomous institute of Ministry of Environment and Forests, India) and obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Botany, HNB Garhwal University Srinagar, Uttarakhand, in 1999. Nautiyal is working as Professor at the Centre for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, India. His areas of interest include socioeconomic and ecological approaches for sustainable livelihood development; production system analysis: agriculture, animal husbandry, medicinal, and aromatic plants cultivation and TEK; GIS and RS in landscape dynamics; PA management; and ecological modeling and climate change-adaptation and mitigation at microlevel. Dr. Nautiyal has received JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science), Postdoctoral Fellowship Award and worked at Center for Spatial Information Science, the University of Tokyo, Japan, for 2 years from November 2003 to November 2005. In December 2005, Dr. Nautiyal received Humboldt fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany for postdoctoral work in Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), Institute of Socio-Economics, Muencheberg, Germany, and started his work under Humboldt fellowship from June 2006 for 2 years. Dr. Nautiyal has received Prestigious Humboldt Kolleg Grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation towards strengthening scientific collaboration between Germany and India with a motto “Germany and India‐ Infinite Opportunities.” In this endeavour Dr. Nautiyal convened International Humboldt Kolleg from October 19 to 21, 2011, at ISEC. He has worked as Visiting Scientist at Centre for Environmental System Research, University of Kassel, Germany. He is an expert reviewer for several national and international journals. Dr. Nautiyal is on the editorial board of several international journals.
