David I. Mayerhoff, holds an M.D. degree currently serves as a certified (ABPN) clinical psychiatrist at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital (GPPH) in Morris Plains, NJ, USA. He is involved in clinical care of the chronic mentally ill, in teaching, and in supervising medical students and residents. He is also a Clinical Professor of psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark, NJ, USA. Mayerhoff, a distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, received his M.D. degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed his psychiatry training at the Hillside Hospital at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He completed a two-year clinical research fellowship at Hillside Hospital, an NIMH-sponsored Clinical Research Center (CRC) for the study of schizophrenia. His focus of research began with hypothalamic function in schizophrenia after which he focused on the phenomenology and treatment outcomes of first-episode schizophrenia with a specific emphasis on the deficit state and the negative symptoms. More recently, Mayerhoff has studied issues relating to deinstitutionalization, as well as intrusiveness and boundary violations among patients at a state psychiatric facility. He has reported on wellness and recovery models in the context of a state and university academic collaboration. Finally, he helped in establishing an education program for students and residents in psychiatry at a state hospital and is involved in all aspects of psychiatric education.
