Carlos E. P. Corbett
Carlos E. P. Corbett graduated from the University of São Paulo Medical School. He recieved his M.D and Ph.D. in medicine and parasitology from the University of São Paulo Medical School. He had postgraduated training at the University of Paris, Hospital Cochin, Prof. Lucian Leger, and at the Charring Cross Hospital, London, Prof. William Symmers. He is a Professor at the University of São Paulo Medical School and the Head of the Laboratory of Infectious Disease Pathology. He is a Supervisor of the National Fund for Science and Technology Development of the Brazilian Federal Government. His main research line is tropical disease, working mainly with leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and emerging parasitoses. His studies mainly focus on the pathogenesis of the disease, looking for the comprehension of the mechanisms evolved in the development of the infection, the host parasite relationship, the role of the immune response, and the correlation between clinical signs and immunopathological data. His most recent works are in the characterization of the clinical and immunological profile of either cutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis. In relation to emerging parasitoses, the development of molecular and histochemical methods for identification of the parasite and epidemiological studies are his main concern. His laboratory works are with immunopathological methods either in infectious disease or cellular differentiation toward gastrointestinal cancer. He has more than 90 papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Another line of his activities is social projects related to medical assistance to wasting population, support for improvement of health in small cities with low human development index as well as communities such as Indians or isolated people. These works cover most of the states and regions of Brazil.
