Gaetano Assanto received the M.S. degree, in 1981, and Ph.D. degree, in 1987, from the ECE. He carried out his studies at the University of Palermo, Italy, the University of Iowa, and the University of Arizona. From 1988 to 1990, he was a Research Associate at the Optical Sciences Center, Tucson, and, from 1990 to 1992, he was a Research Scientist at the Center for Research in Electro Optics and Lasers, University of Central Florida, Orlando, USA. He is currently a Professor of optoelectronics with the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Roma Tre University and the Head of NooEL, the Nonlinear Optics and OptoElectronics Laboratory in Rome. His current research interests include parametric effects for all-optical processing in lithium niobate waveguides, quadratic and nonlocal spatial solitons, Ge-on-Si near infrared photodetectors, and nonlinear optics in liquid crystals. Dr. Assanto is a Topical Editor for OSA Optics Letters and IEEE Photonics Journal, Fellow of the Optical Society of America, and Senior Member of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS).
