Heikki Kro¨ger was born in Kuopio, Finland, in 1960. He graduated with an M.D. degree in 1985 and received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Medicine, University of Kuopio, Kuopio, Finland, in 1991. He is a specialist in surgery, orthopaedics, and traumatology. During the years 1995-1996, he was a Researcher at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has been a Professor of orthopaedics and traumatology at the University of Kuopio since 2001. During the years 2006-2007, he has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His primary research interests are diagnostics and epidemiology of osteoporosis and fractures. His research has been also focused on endoprosthesis surgery and periprosthetic bone changes after arthroplasty. He is the Head of the Bone and Cartilage Research Unit (BCRU) at the University of Kuopio.
