Mark Baker spent 9 years as a Research Scientist, working for varying periods at GEC Hirst Research Centre (London), EU Institute for Advanced Materials (Ispra, Italy), and University of Surrey, UK, after receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Surrey. He currently holds the position of Reader in Surface Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. His expertise lies in the use of sophisticated surface analysis, microscopy, and diffraction techniques to determine the micro-/nanostructure, bonding, and phase composition of materials, particularly nanostructured thin films and coatings for multifunctional applications (e.g., good mechanical strength, low friction, biocompatibility, and electrical/optical properties). Other interests include the study of various surface and interface phenomena (e.g., corrosion, oxidation, wear, and surface treatments).
