Lian Gao is a Professor in Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received the B.S. degree in organic synthesis from the East China University of Science and Technology in 1968, and the Ph.D. degree from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, CAS, China, in 1986. From 1987 to 1988, he was a Postdoctoral Member of the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, England. From 1991 to 1992, he was a Senior Visiting Scientist at the Powder Metallurgy Laboratory (PML) of the Max-Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany. Subsequently, he was employed as an Associate Professor and Professor in Shanghai Institute of Ceramics since 1996. He has served as the Chairman of the Committee of Structure Ceramics of the Chinese Ceramic Society from 1998. His leadership role has also been evident at the national and international levels where he has been actively involved in organizing conferences as well as special sessions at large meetings. Meanwhile, he is a Member of the editorial boards of several international journals like Journal of Ceramic Processing Research, International Journal of Pure and Applied Physics, and Journal of Nanomaterials. He authored or coauthored 4 books in Chinese and more than 500 refereed papers in journals, which have been highly cited more than 2000 times. His accomplishments have been acknowledged in prizes and awards. Among them are the First Awards of Science and Technology from Shanghai Government and his appointment to Fellow of the World Academy of Ceramics.
