Yves Mely

University of Strasbourg, France

Yves Mely was born in Strasbourg, France, in 1961. He has been serving as a doctor of pharmacy since 1984. He earned his Ph.D. degree in biophysics in 1988 and the Adrerus Thesis Prize in 1989. He assumed a Professor Assistant position at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Strasbourg in 1989 and a Full Professor position in 1998. He performed a postdoctoral training in 1997 with the support of a von Humboldt Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, Frankfurt, Germany. He has been acting as a Team Leader since 1999 and the Head of the Laboratory of Biophotonics and Biophysics, since 2009. He was nominated in 2006 as a Member of the Permanent Steering Committee of the Methods and Applications in Fluorescence, constituted by 35 world leaders in fluorescence. He has been serving as the Chair of this committee, since 2011. He was awarded as an Honorary Doctor of the Taras Shevchenko National University, Kiev, Ukraine, in 2011. He acts as a Member of the CNRS National Committee since 2009. He served from 2003 to 2008 as a Codirector of the French network GDR 2588 CNRS functional microscopy of the living. His research activities can be divided into two major axes. The first one focuses on the development of fluorescence instrumentation (FLIM, FCS, STORM/PALM, STED, AFM/TIRF) and innovative environment sensitive fluorescence probes. The second axis is related to the characterization in solution and cells of the interaction of HIV-1 proteins with nucleic acids, membranes, and host cell proteins. He is particularly interested in the molecular mechanism of the nucleic acid chaperone properties of the HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein and in developing new antiviral strategies targeting this protein. His research activities led to more than 180 international publications. Since 2012, he has been serving as an Editor-in-Chief of methods and applications in fluorescence. He works also as the editor of The Protein Journal, Open Journal of Biophysics, Conference papers in biology, and ISRN Biochemistry.
